What is the new name?

Wheelhouse Credit Union! Wheelhouse is commonly used to express expertise, strength in ability and performance. While the new name is unique to a financial institution, it reflects who we are and what we have been to our members for over 80 years. It's in our 'wheelhouse' to provide innovative financial services and solutions. From the popular computer purchase program for City employees to have access to technology, the 1010 Loan for police academy cadets to obtain vital gear for their job, to our energy efficiency and solar loan program to help families save on high energy costs. These are just a few examples of what we have been to our members and we're not done yet. We'll be sharing more exciting news in the next coming months!

When will the name change take effect?

Our target completion date is late November 2018. We will keep you updated throughout our transformation.


Details of the Name Change

We’d like to share some very exciting news with you. San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union is changing its name to Wheelhouse Credit Union. Inspired by our desire to embrace a new and energized future for our Credit Union and members, this transformation reflects who we are in the community while paying tribute to valued members like you.

Wheelhouse is commonly used to express expertise, strength in ability and performance. It’s also a place where you feel most at home. You could say it’s in our wheelhouse to be your preferred financial partner, to provide you with exceptional service and value, and to participate in the community while inspiring others.

As one of the oldest credit unions in San Diego, we are proud of our legacy built together since 1934. While our name has changed, our commitment to you has not. The people you know and count on will continue to provide the personalized service and care you deserve as a valued member.

Growing a healthy and thriving credit union includes attracting new members who can benefit from our core values and receive the greatest banking experience possible. In the coming months, you’ll notice exciting changes in our branches and on our website. We will offer an improved digital banking experience as well as enhanced products and services, but rest assured your accounts will not be affected.

Questions & Answers

Why are we changing the name?

In 1934 the employees of the City of San Diego founded San Diego Municipal Employees Credit Union. Since then, we have shifted and evolved as has our name. In order to ensure our continued relevancy as a vital and thriving financial institution across San Diego we needed to address the confusion regarding eligibility brought about by our name. This name change will better position your Credit Union to provide our current and future members with greater service, value and recognition. We are proud of our history and legacy with City of San Diego employees and we are absolutely committed to serving your financial needs today and in the future.

What will the name change mean to me?

Although the name is changing, what remains the same is our passion to serving you with innovative products and world-class service. This has been the hallmark of who we are.

Is the name change a result of a merger or acquisition?

No, the name change is not the result of a merger or acquisition of any kind. Our name change is part of a comprehensive plan to grow and build a healthy and sustainable organization serving you and future generations of members.

Will the ownership of the Credit Union remain the same?

Yes, the Credit Union will remain 100% owned by you, our members.

Who will be eligible to join?

Our name change will not affect current eligibility requirements. Everyone who lives, works or worships within the County of San Diego can join. Family members of existing Wheelhouse Credit Union members are eligible to join.

How will fees, loan rates and deposit rates be impacted by the name change?

Rates and fees will not be affected by the name change. We will continue to monitor our rates and fees, as we always have, to ensure high value and return to our members. As a not-for-profit financial institution, our profits are returned to members in the form of competitive rates and lower fees.

Will the Credit Union’s contact information change (e.g. phone numbers, website and email addresses)?

All phone numbers will remain the same. We will announce our new website address and email addresses in the coming months, but the old website and email addresses will automatically redirect to the new addresses for a period of six months.

Will my account number change?

No, account and membership numbers will remain the same.

Will I receive a new debit/credit card?

Your San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union cards will continue to work. In the coming months, we will be reissuing debit and credit cards with the Wheelhouse Credit Union name.

Will I receive new checks?

You may continue to use your San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union checks until you run out. When you are ready to re-order your checks, please call 619-297-4835; toll-free 888-907-3628.
